Hexagram 39The Obstacle (The Halt)
Upper : Water (Kan) - ☵Lower : Mountain (Gen) - ☶
"The obstacle. Advantageous is the southwest. Not advantageous is the northeast. It is beneficial to see the great man. Perseverance brings fortune."
The formidable Water lies ahead, the insurmountable Mountain stands behind. You are obstructed. The obstacle is too great to be directly overcome (the northeast, realm of abrupt action). One must turn back and seek allies (the southwest, realm of social retreat). This is the moment to cease relentless striving, to seek counsel from someone wiser (the great man), and to entirely rethink the strategy. To halt is not failure; it is clairvoyance.
"On the mountain is the water: the image of the obstacle. Thus the noble man turns inward and cultivates his character."
The external obstacle is a mirror. Since you cannot advance outwardly, take the opportunity to work on your own inner flaws.
This is the experience of Neurosis or severe existential blockage. The Ego attempts to force its way through with old methods, but the wall is too high. The Unconscious says: "Stop." This blockage is, in reality, a grace: it compels you to consult a therapist, explore your dreams, or change paradigms. The solution will not come from an additional effort of will, but from a change in mindset (turning inward).
This is the pure reflection of a wave function against an infinite potential barrier. The tunnel effect is impossible. The particle rebounds. Attempting to force passage with the same frequency is absurd as the laws of physics oppose it. To pass, the particle must absorb colossal energy (the counsel of the great man) to change its quantum state and leap over the barrier.
