Hexagram 51The Awakener (The Thunder)
Upper : Thunder (Zhen) - ☳Lower : Thunder (Zhen) - ☳
"The Awakener brings success. The thunder arrives: oh! oh! Laughing words: ah! ah! The thunder frightens across a hundred leagues, yet it does not let fall the sacred spoon and the chalice."
The Thunder doubled. The tremor, the unexpected shock that makes the earth quiver. This shock induces terror ("oh! oh!"). Yet this salutary fear awakens the dormant consciousness. He who is inwardly centered (who holds the sacred chalice) does not let his inner axis fall despite the external clamor. Once the danger has passed, the terror transforms into relief and laughter ("ah! ah!").
"The continual thunder: the image of the awakener. Thus the noble man, through fear and trembling, brings order to his life and examines himself."
The shock is not a punishment, but a reminder of life's order.
It is the brutal eruption of an archetypal content into consciousness. A panic attack, a narrowly avoided accident, a sudden revelation. The Ego is terrorized as its illusion of control shatters. Jung explains that these shocks (often linked to the Shadow or the Self) are necessary to awaken us from an inauthentic life. Do not attempt to flee the jolt: use this surge of adrenaline to fundamentally reassess your existence.
It is the brutal energy transition (the quantum leap) or the high-energy collision in a particle accelerator. The system undergoes such a violent influx of energy that its previous state is shattered. Yet it is precisely in these chaotic collisions that new particles and new states of matter are born.
