A concrete step-by-step example
The Yi King may seem abstract with its 64 hexagrams and its millennia-old philosophy. To make all of this very concrete, we will follow Léa's draw. She is going through a period of professional doubt and wishes to consult the Oracle.
Léa received an offer for a new job, very well paid but which seems to require a lot of time. She hesitates to leave her current job, less stimulating but more secure.
What not to ask: "Should I accept this job?" (The I Ching is not a crystal ball to read the future or dictate choices with Yes or No).
What Léa is asking: "What is the dynamic at play if I accept this new position, and how should I position myself regarding this choice?"
Léa takes three identical coins. She assigns a value to each side: • Heads = 2 (Yin, Receptive) • Tails = 3 (Yang, Creative)
By tossing the 3 coins at the same time, the sum must necessarily be 6, 7, 8, or 9. It will repeat this toss 6 times to build its hexagram from bottom to top (from line 1 to line 6).
The combination of the 6 throws gives the lower trigram of the Lake ☱ and the upper trigram of Fire ☲. It is Hexagram 38: Opposition (Contrast).
"The fire burns upwards, the lake water flows downwards. Their directions are opposite. This symbolizes a situation of alienation, divergent interests, or inner conflict."
The dynamics at play: Hexagram 38 is not a catastrophe; it is the hexagram of difference. The Yi King shows here that Léa will likely not feel "naturally at home" in this new environment. There is a gap between her deep values and the dynamics of this position (corporate culture, pressure, pace).
The posture advice: The problem is not about being different; the danger would be wanting to conform too much. The reading does not give an absolute "yes" or "no"; it highlights a real inner tension. This tension must be listened to clearly, and not suppressed under the rug in favor of a false adaptation.
The mutation of lines 2 and 5 transforms hexagram 38 into Hexagram 25: Innocence (Non-Action / Wu Wang). It is here that the reading reveals its ultimate depth. This final hexagram represents the inner state that Léa must cultivate to successfully navigate this situation.
"Under the sky rolls the thunder: all things receive the innocent nature. The noble man nourishes his character with the richness of his virtue."
The required attitude: Innocence in the Yi King is not naivety. It is the right, spontaneous action, without egoic calculation or masks. The Yi King does not ask Léa "is this position good or bad?", but "in what inner state will you accept it?".
The final synthesis for Léa: If she accepts this position solely for prestige, salary, or fear of missing out (by "calculation"), the cultural difference (the 38) will become unbearable. But if she approaches this position with total inner honesty (the 25), without trying to betray her nature to please, then she will be able to "navigate the differences without losing her authenticity." The key to her success will be her alignment, not her ability to adapt.
