Hexagram 23The Splitting Apart (Disintegration)
Upper : Mountain (Gen) - ☶Lower : Earth (Kun) - ☷
"The Splitting Apart. It is not advantageous to go anywhere."
It is the end of autumn, the leaves fall. Only a single Yang line remains at the top, eroded by the rising tide of the five Yin lines below. The structure wavers and is about to collapse. Inferior forces, mediocrity, or illness have undermined the foundations. It is futile to struggle or attempt to consolidate the edifice; it is too late. The only wise attitude is stillness and acceptance of the end of the cycle.
"The mountain rests upon the earth: the image of splitting apart. Thus, the superiors can only secure their position by giving generously to those below."
A mountain that erodes eventually returns to the earth. To soften the fall, one must know how to yield, relinquish privileges, and accompany the downward movement without opposing it violently.
This is the "Dark Night of the Soul." The structure of your Ego, your former certainties, or a relationship upon which you had built your life is disintegrating. It is painful, yet vital. Jung refers to this as *Enantiodromia* (the reversal of extremes). Do not attempt to hold onto what is dying. Accept being reduced to the essential. This is the psychic compost necessary for your future rebirth.
This is quantum decoherence or radioactive disintegration. The system has reached a critical threshold of instability. Its particles lose their bond (the nuclear force yields) and the complex structure collapses into simpler elements with a release of chaotic energy. The form is destroyed, but the energy returns to the universal to be recycled.
