Hexagram 25Innocence (The Unexpected)
Upper : Heaven (Qian) - ☰Lower : Thunder (Zhen) - ☳
"Innocence. Sublime success. Perseverance is advantageous. If there is falsity, misfortune ensues, and it is not advantageous to undertake anything."
Thunder rumbles beneath the heavens. This is the natural movement of life, unpremeditated. Innocence here is not foolish naivety, but the absence of selfish calculation and ulterior motives (Wu Wei, action through non-action). Act according to pure instinct, spontaneously and in harmony with universal rectitude. If your actions are calculated to manipulate the future, they will attract misfortune. Unexpected events will occur: welcome them without judgment.
"Thunder rolls beneath the heavens: all things attain the state of innocence. Thus the ancient kings, rich in virtue, nurtured all beings in harmony with the cosmic time."
Innocent movement is like the beating of the heart: it does not ponder the necessity of beating, it beats because it is its nature.
The archetype of the Divine Child. Your analytical and calculating ego falls silent, giving way to action springing directly from the Self. You are in the purity of the present moment. If you experience an unforeseen and shocking event (illness, dismissal, or a sudden infatuation), it is the Unexpected. Do not attempt to seek "why" or "what is my fault." It is not a punishment, it is simply the movement of the cosmos. Remain integral, the situation will resolve itself.
Pure random synchronicity, devoid of hidden deterministic causality. Quantum mechanics demonstrates (via Bell's inequalities) that the universe contains an element of fundamental randomness (the leap of an electron, the decay of an atom) that is guided by no local hidden variables. Innocence is the joyful acceptance of this non-causality: do not seek to control what is by nature incalculable.
