Hexagram 33Retreat
Upper : Heaven (Qian) - ☰Lower : Mountain (Gen) - ☶
"Retreat. Success. In what is small, perseverance is advantageous."
Heaven (the light) withdraws upward, fleeing the Mountain (the darkness) rising from below. The inferior forces (pettiness, illness, chaos) gain ground. To confront them head-on would be suicidal, for the time is theirs for temporal victory. Retreat is not a cowardly flight; it is an active strategic decision to preserve one's vital forces. Do not become entangled in insoluble conflicts.
"There is a mountain beneath the sky: the image of retreat. Thus the noble man keeps the vulgar man at a distance, not with anger, but with dignity."
Dignified indifference is the best shield against vulgarity or hatred. Anger would bind you to the enemy. Dignity detaches you from them.
In the face of a toxic or vampiric situation, the Ego must learn to withdraw its Libido (its psychic energy). Jung calls this protective introversion. Cease to nourish the neurosis (yours or others') with your attention. Withdrawal allows you to safeguard your center (the Self) while awaiting better days. Accept that you cannot save everyone nor win every external battle.
It is Decoherence avoided by Isolation. A very fragile quantum system (like a quantum computer) loses its coherence if it interacts with the thermal 'noise' of the environment. The only way to preserve quantum superposition is to physically isolate the system (cryogenics, absolute vacuum). Retreat is this strategic cooling to preserve vital information.
