Hexagram 42Increase
Upper : Wind (Xun) - ☴Lower : Thunder (Zhen) - ☳
"Increase. It is advantageous to undertake something. It is advantageous to cross the great waters."
In contrast to the preceding hexagram, here it is the upper (the sovereign) that diminishes itself to enrich the lower (the people). Wind and Thunder amplify one another. This is a time of blessing, rapid growth, and exceptional opportunities. Bold enterprises will succeed. The increase is enduring because it is founded on generosity: one truly enriches oneself by giving to those below.
"Wind and thunder: the image of Increase. Thus the noble man, if he sees the good, imitates it; if he has faults, he rids himself of them."
The noble man augments his moral value through the immediate imitation of the beautiful actions he observes.
You are in a phase of psychic grace. New archetypal energies rise from the unconscious, but instead of overwhelming you, they fertilize you. The Ego expands with joy (positive inflation). To ensure this increase does not devolve into megalomania, you must share this newfound vitality (your ideas, your joy, your assistance) with those around you. Psychic energy stagnates if it is not distributed.
This is Constructive Interference and Amplification. Two waves in phase (Wind and Thunder) add together, instantly doubling the amplitude of energy. Or the Avalanche effect in a photomultiplier tube: a single incident photon releases millions of electrons through successive collisions, amplifying a minuscule signal into a dazzling macroscopic force.
