Hexagram 56The Traveler
Upper : Fire (Li) - ☲Lower : Mountain (Gen) - ☶
"The Traveler. Success through smallness. Perseverance is advantageous for the traveler."
Fire runs over the Mountain. It burns here, then there, but never settles. The traveler is a foreigner, a passing guest without ties or local power. His survival depends on his modesty and adaptability. If he shows arrogance or meddles in the quarrels of the natives, he will lose his shelter. He must remain polite, humble, and content with little ("success through smallness").
"Fire on the mountain: the image of the traveler. Thus the noble man is clear and prudent in the application of penalties and does not let trials drag on."
The foreigner must not let conflicts linger, for he lacks the roots to sustain them.
The Ego realizes its transient nature. We are all travelers in this body and on this Earth. The archetype of the Wanderer or the Pilgrim (the Fool of the Tarot). Do not attempt to cling to a fixed identity, status, or material certainties, for your profound nature is in motion. Be the courteous witness of your own life, ready to break camp when the Unconscious calls you to a new stage.
It is the Photon (the particle of light) or the Neutrino. A particle without rest mass, which cannot physically stop. It traverses the cosmic void at the speed of light. The neutrino, in particular, interacts so little with its environment that it passes through planets without leaving a trace: it is the absolute traveler of the quantum world.
