Hexagram 44Coming to Meet
Upper : Heaven (Qian) - ☰Lower : Wind (Xun) - ☴
"Coming to Meet. The maiden is powerful. One should not marry such a maiden."
A single Yin line subtly introduces itself from below, beneath five Yang lines. It is the inverse of Breakthrough. An inferior force, subtle yet corruptive (a rumor, a temptation, an old habit) comes to meet you in an innocent guise (the wind). It appears harmless, but if you allow it to settle or ally with it ("marry the maiden"), it will consume all the light from within.
"Beneath Heaven is the Wind: the image of meeting. Thus the prince, in disseminating his commands, addresses the four cardinal points."
The wind infiltrates everywhere. The conscious man must disseminate his clear principles with the same penetrating power to prevent malevolent influences from taking root.
This is the subtle return of the Shadow. You believe yourself healed or completely master of the situation (the 5 Yang lines). Suddenly, an old temptation, a cynical idea, or jealousy discreetly infiltrates. If you give it attention, this small complex will take control of your psyche. Jung advises the utmost vigilance against the minute movements of the unconscious. Cut the evil at its root before it grows.
This is the Butterfly Effect (or Sensitivity to Initial Conditions) in quantum mechanics. An infinitesimal quantum fluctuation, seemingly negligible (the first Yin line), infiltrates the void. If the system is unstable, this micro-disturbance will grow exponentially through a chain reaction, eventually destroying the macroscopic order of the system.
